๐ฆ The Cell
Cell structure, organelles, plant vs animal cell.
๐ก The Building Block of Life
The cell is the smallest structural and functional unit of life. Robert Hooke discovered cells in 1665 while looking at cork under a microscope. Every living thing โ from bacteria to blue whales โ is made of cells.
Two main types:
โข Prokaryotic โ no nucleus, simple. Bacteria, archaea.
โข Eukaryotic โ has nucleus + organelles. Plants, animals, fungi, protists.
Key organelles (Eukaryotic):
โข Nucleus โ control center, holds DNA
โข Mitochondria โ "powerhouse", makes ATP energy
โข Ribosomes โ protein factories
โข ER (Endoplasmic Reticulum) โ transport network
โข Golgi apparatus โ packages proteins
โข Lysosomes โ "digestive bags"
โข Cell membrane โ controls entry/exit
โข Cytoplasm โ jelly where everything floats
Plant cells have 3 extra parts animal cells don't:
โข Cell wall โ rigid outer layer (made of cellulose)
โข Chloroplasts โ green, do photosynthesis
โข Large central vacuole โ stores water, gives plant its shape
Animal cells are usually round; plant cells are rectangular because of the cell wall.
Mitochondria have their own DNA (separate from nucleus)! Scientists believe mitochondria were once free-living bacteria that got swallowed by other cells billions of years ago. This is the endosymbiotic theory.
You inherit ALL your mitochondria from your mother โ that's why mitochondrial DNA is used to trace maternal ancestry.
