Chemistry ยท Chapter 05

๐Ÿงซ Acids & Bases

pH, neutralization, indicators.

๐Ÿ’ก The pH Scale

Acids release Hโบ ions in water โ€” they taste sour (lemon, vinegar). Bases release OHโป ions and feel slippery (soap, baking soda).

The pH scale goes from 0 to 14:

โ€ข 0โ€“6 โ†’ acidic (stronger as you go lower)
โ€ข 7 โ†’ neutral (pure water)
โ€ข 8โ€“14 โ†’ basic / alkaline (stronger as you go higher)

When an acid meets a base, they cancel each other out โ€” that's neutralization. It produces water + a salt.

HCl + NaOH โ†’ NaCl + Hโ‚‚O
