Chemistry ยท Chapter 08

๐Ÿ›ข๏ธ Carbon Compounds

The chemistry of life.

๐Ÿ’ก The Element of Life

Every living thing โ€” plants, animals, you โ€” is built around carbon. Why? Because carbon can form 4 bonds, link with itself, and build endless chains and rings.

Some important carbon compounds:

โ€ข Methane (CHโ‚„) โ€” natural gas. The simplest organic molecule.
โ€ข Glucose (Cโ‚†Hโ‚โ‚‚Oโ‚†) โ€” the sugar your body burns for energy.
โ€ข Ethanol (Cโ‚‚Hโ‚…OH) โ€” alcohol in beverages, fuel.
โ€ข DNA โ€” your genetic code, made of carbon-based molecules.

Allotropes of pure carbon: graphite (soft, in pencils), diamond (hardest natural substance), and graphene (super-conductive sheets).
