๐ŸŒฟ Natural Vegetation & Wildlife

Forest types, biodiversity, national parks, and conservation.

๐ŸŒฟ India's Rich Biodiversity

India is one of the world's 17 megadiverse countries โ€” home to 7โ€“8% of all recorded species despite having only 2.4% of the world's land area. This is due to India's varied climate, topography, and geological history.

Types of natural vegetation (based on rainfall & temperature):

1. Tropical Evergreen Forests โ€” rainfall >200cm, temp >22ยฐC. Always green. Western Ghats, NE India, Andaman. Dense, multi-layered. Ebony, rosewood, mahogany.
2. Tropical Deciduous Forests (Monsoon forests) โ€” 75โ€“200cm rainfall. Trees shed leaves in dry season. India's most widespread forest. Teak, sal, sandalwood, neem.
3. Tropical Thorn Forests โ€” <75cm rainfall. Arid/semi-arid regions (Rajasthan, MP, UP). Thorny shrubs, acacias, cacti. Khair, babool.
4. Mountain Vegetation โ€” changes with altitude. Himalayan foothills โ†’ temperate forests (oak, chestnut) โ†’ coniferous (pine, fir, spruce) โ†’ Alpine (grasslands, mosses) โ†’ Snow.
5. Mangrove Forests โ€” tidal coastal areas. Sundarbans (WB), Bhitarkanika (Odisha), Pichavaram (TN). Support rich coastal biodiversity.

๐Ÿ… India's iconic wildlife โ€” endangered species

โ€ข Bengal Tiger โ€” national animal. Project Tiger launched 1973. ~3,682 tigers (2022 census) โ€” 70% of world's wild tigers!
โ€ข Indian Elephant โ€” national heritage animal. Southern and NE India. Project Elephant 1992.
โ€ข One-horned Rhinoceros โ€” Kaziranga (Assam). ~2,600 left. UNESCO World Heritage Site.
โ€ข Snow Leopard โ€” High Himalayas. Endangered. ~400โ€“700 in India.
โ€ข Asiatic Lion โ€” only in Gir National Park (Gujarat). ~674 left (2020).
โ€ข Olive Ridley Sea Turtle โ€” mass nesting at Gahirmatha Beach (Odisha).

๐ŸŒณ Key national parks & wildlife sanctuaries

โ€ข Jim Corbett (Uttarakhand) โ€” oldest national park in India (1936). Tiger reserve.
โ€ข Kaziranga (Assam) โ€” one-horned rhinoceros, UNESCO site, Project Tiger site
โ€ข Gir (Gujarat) โ€” only wild Asiatic lion habitat
โ€ข Sundarbans (WB) โ€” Bengal tiger, mangrove ecosystem, UNESCO site
โ€ข Periyar (Kerala) โ€” elephant & tiger, biosphere reserve
โ€ข Ranthambore (Rajasthan) โ€” tiger, popular tourism destination
โ€ข Keoladeo Ghana (Rajasthan) โ€” migratory birds, UNESCO site

Rainfall is the primary factor โ€” more rain = denser, taller, evergreen forests.
