Indian and Western music both have towering figures whose contributions defined entire eras and traditions.
Indian classical โ ancient foundational figures:
โข Bharata Muni (~200 BCE) โ Natya Shastra โ codified music, dance, drama theory
โข Matanga Muni (~9th cent) โ Brihaddeshi โ first to use the word "raga"
โข Amir Khusrow (1253-1325) โ invented/developed sitar, tabla, khayal, tarana, qawwali

โข His six children continued the musical tradition โ gharana system spread through his lineage.
โข Darbari Kanada โ his most famous creation โ is considered the "king of ragas" and is performed only late at night.

5. Romantic (1820-1900)
Emotional expression, nationalism. Beethoven (late), Brahms, Chopin, Liszt, Tchaikovsky, Schubert.
